On September 29, 2024, 60 Minutes aired an investigative report exposing widespread misconduct in property claim handling by insurance companies, a revelation that shocked many consumers.
However, as someone who has worked in the property insurance industry for over 16 years—both for national insurance companies and now as a Public Adjuster—this report was anything but surprising to me. In fact, it’s something I’ve witnessed countless times. The issues highlighted are not limited to a few companies, nor are they new; they’ve been festering for years, especially in states like Florida, where hurricanes like Helene and Milton have intensified claims activity.
This ongoing misconduct is precisely what motivated me to switch sides and start advocating for homeowners. I’ve seen firsthand how the combination of increased workloads, reduced compensation for adjusters, and the hiring of inexperienced professionals has led to disastrous outcomes. Claims are mishandled, homeowners’ concerns are overlooked, and critical coverage decisions are made by individuals who lack the necessary expertise—all in the middle of catastrophic events that devastate people’s homes, investments, and peace of mind.
What was once a profession built on promises of trust—being in “good hands” or “like a good neighbor”—has now become a system of overwhelmed, disengaged, and underqualified adjusters. And who suffers the most? The homeowners, who deserve far better.
If you’ve worked with me, you know how passionate I am about these issues because I encounter them daily. Unfortunately, navigating a property insurance claim has become so complex that without an advocate on your side, you’re more likely to feel victimized than served.
